A low residue diet is low in fibre (1g or less). It is designed to reduce stress on the gut and is recommended in a flare of acute diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease. It may delay the development of complete bowel obstruction in patients with bowel narrowing/stricture. A low residue diet slows the movement of food through the digestive tract and stool bulk. It can be recommended after major bowel surgery to minimize gut discomfort and bloating. Examples of low residue/fibre food include white bread, white rice, white pasta, Asparagus tips, beets, green beans, carrots, mushrooms, pumpkin, and pureed spinach. Meats are ‘easy’ in that virtually all are low in fibre – chicken, beef, lamb, veal, pork and fish. Fruits include bananas, peaches and pears.
